Education and Philosophy

I am a university and apprentice-trained midwife offering homebirth and waterbirth, certified through the American Midwifery Certification Board and the North American Registry of Midwives. My skill-set includes a combination of modern medical care and hands-on traditional midwifery care. I am gentle and thorough in my approach, caring for mothers and babies in a holistic, accepting manner.

As a homebirth mother myself, I understand the desire for a birth that is low intervention and on your terms as much as possible. As a midwife, I protect the birthing space so you feel free to birth in your own way and in your own time. I respect the powerful physiologic birth processes and do not intervene unless necessary. I am diligent in monitoring the health of the birthing person and the baby throughout, providing informed consent and obtaining consent with all care.

I started training to become a midwife in 2010, completing my CPM credential in 2014 and CNM/MSN degree through Frontier Nursing University in 2020. Jennifer Konkol, CPM was my primary mentor in my homebirth training, and we have continued working together over the past decade. An essential part of the care I provide is excellent breastfeeding support. Following in the footsteps of my mother, I was a La Leche League Leader in the St. Louis area for 13 years, gaining extensive experience and knowledge of breastfeeding issues from the newborn period through the toddler years. I continue providing this care independently as an IBCLC and through my work as a midwife.

Testimonials

"Barbara was the assistant midwife at my first home birth, to my 4th baby. She was so attentive to me after I gave birth, and had such a pleasant and gentle nature. The day I gave birth was the first time I met Barbara, but I felt as though we had known one another by her kindness and the flow she took in caring for me and my home (tidied up my room and started a load of laundry before she left!)."
